Course Objective

At the end of this course, learners should be able to:
1.Distinguish the difference in learning context, teaching content and objectives between L1 and L2 teaching.
2.Define the communicative competence and the components of communicative competence.
3.Describe the principles of various teaching approaches and typical teaching processes.
4.Compare and contrast various second language teaching approaches with regards to the general principles, objectives, teaching materials, and activities.
5.Using current textbooks, apply the different teaching approaches in designing activities to teach oral skills.


Course Outline

The course includes the following:
1.Introducing the differences between L1 teaching and L2 teaching in terms of learning environment, content and objectives.
2.Explaining the communicative competence and the components of communicative competence:
• linguistic dimension
• socio-cultural dimension
• pragmatic dimension
• cognitive dimension
3.Analysing the objectives of teaching speaking in current curriculum.
4.Introducing various approaches of teaching oral Chinese as a second language:
• Situational approach
• Communicative approach
• Task-based approach
5.Hands-on exercises of designing oral activities for teaching speaking using the current textbooks.
