Course Objective

After attending the course, participants will be able to:
1.Differentiate the ordinary reading comprehension and evaluative reading comprehension.
2.Understand the cognitive aspects of the evaluative reading comprehension.
3.Integratuion of textbook teaching and evaluative reading comprehension.
4.Guide pupils in grasping evaluative reading strategies.
5.Correct pupils’ errors in answering evaluative comprehension questions.

Course Outline

The course includes the following:
1.A brief introduction to the comprehension cognitive models.
2.An analysis of the question types in the past years PSLE exam papers.
3.The characteristics of evaluative reading comprehension with reference to the questions e.g. “in your opinion……”, “In your view……, provides evidence to it” , ”If you were……, how would you…… ” learning and answer requirements, and answering skills.
4.Effective strategies for teaching evaluative reading comprehension e.g. QAR (Question and Answer Relationship).
5.Corrective teaching strategies e.g. crafting of sentences and guiding answering technique.
6.Hand-on session on lesson plan design.
