Abstract
This paper shows a pilot study of an oral training curriculum devised by a team of school teachers and researchers. This curriculum aims at deepening students' understanding of Chinese language, communication, and social networking as well as promoting their competence. We integrate the theories and frameworks of "Teaching for Understanding" and "Understanding by Design" with the blended course design. The understanding performances focus on achieving a pre-advanced language level (functional & technical) through three communicative modes via Web 2.0 tools while practicing with authentic communication scenarios. This paper provides a variety of Web 2.0 resources, reviews materials, argues for better design for Chinese oral curriculum, and outlines directions for future research.
