Abstract
Games provide intrinsic motivation for children. When using games in language teaching, teachers can create opportunities for children to use the target language in a meaningful and purposeful way during class and in learning corners. "Fun Games for Learning Mandarin" is a set of teaching aids developed by Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) and NTUC's SEED Institute, to encourage and support children in language learning. Considerations were made to increase the exposure of the target language through pictures and words, opportunities to practice oral Chinese Language and also integrating the local (Singapore) context. Theoretical basis that guides teachers in using games effectively in class are discussed; understanding the design behind the teaching aids creates opportunity for teachers to design their own games, and using them effectively to make the learning of Chinese Language fun and engaging. 60 (4-6 years old) preschoolers participated in the trial and development of the teaching aids.
