Developed by the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language, the “Teacher’s Guide and Activity Design for Extracurricular Reading of Picture Storybooks for Primary Students - Using the ‘Unboxing the Treasured Memories’ Graded Picture Book Series as Examples” teaching toolkit is specially designed to support Chinese language teachers in guiding primary school students (Primary 1-6) through extracurricular reading using picture storybooks.
This teaching toolkit is developed based on the distinctive characteristics of picture storybooks and conforms to the “Chinese Language Syllabus Primary” (2015 and 2024 editions) and the “Six Levels of Reading Proficiency Framework”. The meticulously crafted guiding questions and a variety of interactive reading activities, both digital and hands-on, would enhance students’ reading experiences. These activities are tailored to each grade’s reading level and cognitive development, supporting progressive growth in student’s reading abilities.
This comprehensive package consists of four key teaching resources: lesson plans and activity guides, online games, animated PowerPoint slides as well as e-books.
Feedbacks from both teachers and students during the trial teaching show that the resources can not only spark students’ interest in reading but also boost active participation. Chinese language teachers can utilise this teaching toolkit to effectively cultivate students’ personalised reading skills and gradually nurture them into confident, autonomous readers.
