Introduction

The status of Chinese language in Singapore has gradually changed from that of first language to second language. The decline of standard is an undeniable fact. There have been several adjustments to the textbooks, pedagogy, and evaluation, with the hope of maintaining the standards, but the outcomes are not as desired.

The author explores the underlying causes of the gradual decline of the standard of Chinese from the perspective of language ecology and puts forth some practical suggestions. It is the author's hope that concerned readers will reflect on the identified problems and try out the suggestions.
