SCCL Organises the "2018 National Chinese Mobile App Development by Students for Students Competition"
To promote the application of science and technology and also encourage Chinese language learning, SCCL organised the "2018 National Chinese Mobile App Development by Students for Students Competition" in November 2017. This is the first Chinese app development competition open to all students in Singapore and is sponsored by the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism (LKYFB), supported by the Education Technology Division (ETD), Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), SEED Institute, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA).
The competition is open to all students in secondary schools, polytechnics, Institute of Technical Education and junior colleges. It aims to encourage students to creatively apply their ICT knowledge and tap on their Chinese learning experience so as to develop mobile applications that would stimulate the interests of local preschool and lower primary children in learning Chinese.
More than 400 students from different races in 94 teams have taken part in the competition and attended the 2-day workshop in Hwa Chong Institution on 6-7 November. The workshop took participants through the entire process of creating an app, and provided an overview on Chinese Language learning resource development. The participating teams will also have access to technical and language consultants from whom they can seek help throughout the app development process.
The mobile applications arising from the competition will engage preschool and lower primary school children in Chinese language learning in fun and interesting ways. The 20 themes covered by the mobile applications include "our festivals", "fruits and vegetables", "what's in my school" and other topics related to local students' daily life. Thereby, the competition encourages children to become active learners and users of Chinese language at a young age.
The winning teams will be announced in April 2018. Their award-winning apps will also be optimised and made available in app stores for public to download.
