A Virtual Sharing Session Co-organised by SCCL and NIE

 

          To promote Chinese Language education research and academic exchange and communication, the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) and the National Institute of Education (NIE) co-organised a virtual sharing session on 14 January 2022. The topic of the sharing session is "Preparing for Future Language Learners".

          The sharing session was hosted by Dr Lin Jinzhan, Head of Research from SCCL. There were four speakers: Associate Professor Chen Wenli, Associate Professor Vahid Aryadoust from NIE, Dr Zhang Limei and Dr Lin Yao-San from SCCL.

          Prof Chen gave a lecture titled "From Cooperation to Collaboration: Technology-Supported Collaborative Language Learning". She shared her design-based research projects on the technological and pedagogical design to support students' collaborative knowledge improvement in Chinese language learning context in Singapore classrooms. Dr Zhang shared her study titled "Improving Students' Writing Performance Using Online Writing Systems". She provided introduction on the use of online writing systems in two different educational settings: the Chinese Essay Guiding System (CEGS) among Singapore secondary students and the Pigai system among Chinese college students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Prof Vahid Aryadoust gave his sharing titled "A Glance into Some Neurocognitive Processes in Listening Assessment". He introduced some of the neurophysiological and affective processes underlying listening, and shared how to apply the technologies of neuroimaging, eye tracking, facial emotional recognition, and galvanic skin response to listening assessment. Dr Lin gave a lecture titled "SOTA in NLP for CL". He introduced the current development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) as well as the SOTA in NLP, especially several applications of Chinese NLP tools in education.

          There were nearly 60 scholars and students attending this virtual sharing session. It was the first academic event jointly organized by SCCL and NIE.
