The 3rd Online Joint Seminar Co-Organised by SCCL and EdUHK

 

          To strengthen the academic exchanges between Singapore and Hong Kong in Chinese education research, the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL), the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education (CRCLE) and the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) co-organised the third session of the virtual joint lectures by famous Chinese education experts and scholars on the afternoon of 30th September 2022.

          Chaired by Dr Liao Xian, Deputy Head of the Department of Chinese Linguistics, EdUHK, the joint lecture invited two speakers: Dr Lam Ho Cheong, Assistant Professor from the Department of Early Childhood Education, EdUHK and Associate Professor Aw Guat Poh, Assistant Head (Chinese) of the Division of Chinese Language and Culture at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Dr Lam's topic was "The Phenomenography of Children's Learning of Chinese Characters and its Implication to Teaching". He introduced the research on children's perception of Chinese characters and vocabulary, the findings of which will help kindergarten and primary school teachers teach effectively. Associate Professor Aw shared her research on "Textbook Evaluation based on 'Teaching Material Acceptance Model (TMAM)': A Case Study of Teachers' Perception of 2021 New Secondary Chinese Textbooks in Singapore". She explored Singapore secondary school teachers' acceptance of 2021 new Chinese textbooks through a questionnaire survey on their perception of the teaching materials.

          The joint lecture attracted 67 scholars and teachers from various institutions in Hong Kong and Singapore, including those from the Ministry of Education. It was the third lecture jointly organised by SCCL and EdUHK. The two parties planned to continue to co-host joint talks in the first half of 2023.
