SCCL Academic Lecture Series

On 20 November 2024, Dr Wen Yun, Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, delivered a lecture titled "Empowering Multimodal Feedback with Generative AI: A Case Study on Chinese Vocabulary Learning" at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL).

Dr Wen began with an introduction on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education from the perspective of the learning sciences, and proceeded to discuss with participants on the potential and limitations of generative AI in education, as well as the differences between generative AI and traditional AI. She then presented a study on how generative AI empowers multimodal feedback, focusing on seamless vocabulary learning. The study involved an intervention using an AI-powered platform for vocabulary instruction in six classes across three schools. The findings showed that students found the AI-powered features highly engaging, and their vocabulary test scores improved after the intervention. Currently, Dr Wen is conducting the second stage of this study to explore ways to better align her AI-powered platform with the needs of Chinese language teaching in Singaporean primary schools. Factors such as the differences in language proficiency among students and multimodal content generation and feedback will be added. During the Q&A session, Dr Wen discussed with the two directors and research team of SCCL on how generative AI could empower local Chinese language teaching and its potential impact on students' learning outcomes.
