Associate Professor Cheong Choo Mui from The University of Hong Kong Visited SCCL

         On 7 August 2024, Assoc Prof Cheong Choo Mui from The University of Hong Kong delivered a talk titled "Online Reading Study and Its Follow-Up Results" at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). She shared the design of and findings from a study conducted in eight primary schools in Hong Kong. Focusing on the key features of online reading, the research team designed an online reading curriculum and conducted an experimental study across different grades in the eight primary schools. Specific skill indicators for online reading were developed to assess students' online reading ability and to evaluate the effectiveness of the online reading package designed by the research team. Assoc Prof Cheong ended with a brief introduction on a follow-up teacher training programme based on the online reading research and an analysis of the prospects and challenges of online reading research.

         After her presentation, Assoc Prof Cheong engaged SCCL lecturers and researchers with an in-depth discussion on the reading ability and research findings on online reading of students in Hong Kong and Singapore. They shared their views on reading literacy, perspectives on online reading skills, research findings on the development of Chinese reading skills among students in Hong Kong and Singapore. They also discussed on future potential research directions and challenges in the field of online reading.
