Tips for Parents, Chinese for Children: How do English-speaking Parents Teach Their Children to Read Chinese

How to get children to be proficient and passionate readers of Chinese books? The influence from the parents is essential.
On 4 May 2013, Singapore Centre for Chinese Language organised a free seminar on the topic specifically for English-speaking parents.
Held at the Auditorium of Woodlands Library, the seminar attracted approximately 200 visitors. The Guest-of-Honour was Ms Sim Ann, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Communications and Information.
The speakers were (1) Dr Connie Lum, a Principal Curriculum Specialist with My First Skool and the Dean of Pre-school Department at the Singapore Centre for Chinese language, (1) Dr Petunia Lee, a human motivation specialist, and (3) Mdm Ng Lay Hoon, a mother of three children and an ex-teacher.
Emphasizing the effects of interest in reading and learning, the seminar aims to provide English-speaking parents with some strategies on how to help their children learn Chinese. All three speakers were of the view that the interest of reading in Chinese should be cultivated as early as possible. They gave some practical tips on how to choose appropriate Chinese books for children. They believed that picture books with interesting illustrations and a great storyline can stimulate children's interest in Chinese.
