Cultural Talk – "Language Learning and Cultural Teaching: Exclusion and Integration"
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, SCCL has launched a series talks on culture for Chinese educators. The first cultural talk was held on 27 July 2018. Entitled "Language Learning and Cultural Teaching: Exclusion and Integration", it attracted more than 100 educators from the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Education, primary schools, secondary schools and preschools. Given by Dr Foo Suan Fong (SCCL Executive Director) and Dr Soh Kay Cheng (SCCL Research Consultant/Senior Fellow), the talk focused on the perspectives of "culture in language" and "language in culture".
It triggered lively discussions among participants. Participants opined that the talk inspired them to reflect on the relationship between Chinese learning and cultural teaching. It also illustrated how to properly arrange cultural learning activities in teaching, help students develop cultural identity and ultimately achieve the goals of teaching mother-tongue language.
