The 5th International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language (TLCSL) and SCCL 10th Anniversary Celebrations
To promote research in the field of teaching and learning Chinese as a second language and to facilitate the application of research findings, Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) held the 5th International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language (TLCSL) at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre on 12-13th Sep 2018. The conference theme this year was "Inheriting the past, Leading the future".

Cultural Talk – "Language Learning and Cultural Teaching: Exclusion and Integration"
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, SCCL has launched a series talks on culture for Chinese educators. The first cultural talk was held on 27 July 2018. Entitled "Language Learning and Cultural Teaching: Exclusion and Integration", it attracted more than 100 educators from the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Education, primary schools, secondary schools and preschools. Given by Dr Foo Suan Fong (SCCL Executive Director) and Dr Soh Kay Cheng (SCCL Research Consultant/Senior Fellow), the talk focused on the perspectives of "culture in language" and "language in culture".

CPDD-NIE-SEAB-SCCL Sharing Forum 2018
The Quadripartite Sharing Forum was held at SCCL on 21 May 2018. Curriculum specialists, academia and researchers from MOE 's Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) and Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) participated in the forum. Participants discussed on topics related to the teaching and learning of Chinese language in Singapore and deliberated on how the four parties can synergize efforts to enhance effective teaching and learning of Chinese.

2018 National Preschool Teaching Aids Competition - Things in Everyday Life
The first "National Preschool Teaching Aids Competition - Things in Everyday Life" , held by Singapore Centre for Chinese Language, has received overwhelming responses. More than 200 entries were submitted, and over 100 teachers, parents, and students took part in the competition.

The 2nd SCCL-HQU Symposium on Chinese Language Teaching
Jointly organised by the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) and Huaqiao University (HQU), the 2nd SCCL-HQU Symposium on Chinese Language Teaching was held on 26th and 27th July 2018 at SCCL. The theme of this year was "New Directions and Approaches of Chinese Language Teaching".

SCCL Joined the Book Fair at Speak Mandarin Campaign and 2018 Singapore Book Fair
SCCL was invited to display and sell books at the Speak Mandarin Campaign public talk entitled "Mandarin and Chinese Culture: The Joys of Learning." Organized by the Promote Mandarin Council, the event was held on 19 May 2018. SCCL also participated in the 2018 Singapore Book Fair held at Capitol Singapore from 25-31 May.

SCCL Staff Invited as Speakers
SCCL Executive Director Dr Foo Suan Feng, Senior Lecturer Dr May Liu, Master Teacher Mdm Zheng Yingjiang were invited to attend and deliver keynote speeches at the Taipei Bilingual Education Forum – The Practice and Prospect of Bilingual Education held at Taipei Municipal Yang Ming Senior High School on 25-26 June.

Activities in SCCL
SCCL organised "Keep Clean, Singapore!" on 27 April 2018 and Dragon Boat Festival Celebration on 6 June 2018.

New Staff and Interns
Dr Yao-San Lin holds a Ph. D. in industrial and information management from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He has years of research experience in machine-learning-assisted teaching and learning of Chinese. His main research interests include AI-supported collaborative learning, natural language processing assisted with deep neural networks and teacher professional development. Dr Lin is currently a lecturer at SCCL.
