Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) and Huayue Education, an education and technology company from Beijing, co-held a round-table session on 1st March 2018. The theme of this session was "AI Technology and Language Education of the Future". Some officers from Curriculum Planning & Development Division (CPDD) of Ministry of Education also attended the session.

     Mr Xu Xiaoping, the Chief Product Officer of Huayue Education, gave a presentation about the application of AI in future language education. He introduced the five-stage development of new technology and pointed out that AI development is now in the Inflated Expectations Stage. He then demonstrated some popular educational products integrated with AI technology in China, focusing the products developed by Huayue Education, such as read-aloud evaluating system, character writing evaluating system and level reading.

     After Mr Xu's presentation, Dr Lin Yao-San, lecturer of SCCL, gave a sharing titled "AI in language learning: Natural Language Processing". Dr Lin described the three stages of AI development and gave an overview of the history and application of Natural Language Processing, which is a significant component of AI.

     At the end of the session, the audience exchanged views on the application of AI in Chinese language teaching and the problems that may arise.
