Joint Development of a Chinese Cultural Elective Course by SCCL and SUSS
Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) is providing an elective course on Chinese culture, entitled "Chinese Culture: From Traditional to Contemporary", for Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) from the July semester 2021. Under the leadership of Dr Foo Suan Fong, the Executive Director of SCCL, SCCL held a first online meeting with SUSS on 17 February and initial consensus was reached on jointly developing a Chinese cultural elective course for SUSS students. With Dr Lin Yao-San and Mdm Gong Cheng's assistance, Dr Zhang Limei, the Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs, gave an online talk on "A Taste of Chinese Culture: From Chinese Characters to Chinese Culture" on 24 March, introducing the contents and framework of the course to SUSS students, who gave positive feedback on the talk and showed deep interest in the course.
This cultural elective course aims at enhancing students' appreciation of traditional Chinese culture, local Singaporean culture and the nexus between the two. It is expected that the course will deepen students' cultural understanding of Singapore and China and strengthen their ability to engage socially and professionally in China. There are 12 units in the course, including Introduction to Chinese Culture: From Traditional to Contemporary, Introduction to Singapore's Multi-Cultural Heritage, Traditional Chinese Festivals and Folklores, Singapore Local Festivals and Folklores, Chinese Food Culture, Singapore Local Food Culture, Famous Persons in China: From Ancient to Contemporary, Famous Persons in Singapore, Chinese Characters: Fun Talk, Chinese Language in Singapore and China, Cyber Culture in China and Chinese Popular Culture. This course has been delivered on 28 July and will lasts for six weeks. Dr Zhang Limei, Dr Lin Yao-San, and Mdm Gong Cheng are the lecturers of the course. 60 students have registered for the course. This is a very good starting point of SCCL's internationalisation plan.
