The 4th Online Joint Seminar Co-Organised by SCCL and EdUHK
To strengthen academic exchanges in Chinese education research between Singapore and Hong Kong, the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL), and the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education as well as the Department of Chinese Language Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) co-organised an on-line seminar on the afternoon of 5 May 2023.
The seminar was chaired by Dr Lin Jinzhan, Head of Research Department of SCCL. The two invited speakers were Dr Lam Sin Manw, Assistant Professor from the Department of Chinese Language, EdUHK, and Dr Gong Cheng, Lecturer of SCCL. Dr Lam's topic was "Exploring the Reading Strategies of Hong Kong Secondary Students in Classical Chinese". She shared the findings of her research which aims to contribute to the professional development of first and second language Chinese teachers. The research seeks to find out effective teaching methods of Classical Chinese and explore the ways in which cultural knowledge can enhance students' interest in learning and understanding Classical Chinese. Dr Gong's talk was on "Creating a Writing Learning Environment that Provides Sustainable Assistance to Learners". The talk summarized the findings of her study on teaching writing in secondary schools in Singapore. In the study, she analysed the various components of a writing learning environment that can provide effective support for students and came up with an effective teaching model for the enhancement of students' writing skills. She discussed and elaborated on the model's functionality and its pedagogical applications.
The presentations were followed by lively interactions and exchanges between the speakers and the audience.
The seminar attracted 69 scholars and teachers from various institutes of higher learning in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well the Ministry of Education of Singapore. It was the fourth seminar jointly organised by SCCL and EdUHK. Another round has been planned for the second half of the year.
