SCCL Academic Lecture Series
On the morning of 19 April 2024, the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) held an academic lecture themed "Chinese Language Teaching in the Context of the Technological Era." The speakers were SCCL visiting scholar, Assoc Prof Leung Wai Mun from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Dr Fan Jinghua, a lecturer of SCCL. This lecture was conducted simultaneously online and face-to-face for the first time, and was hosted by Dr Han Yiting from SCCL.
The title of Assoc Prof Leung Wai Mun's speech was "Textbook Evolution: Comparative Analysis of Mainstream Chinese Textbooks in Hong Kong Primary Schools and Personalised Learning Supported by AI". Assoc Prof Leung comparatively analysed the compilation of three sets of mainstream textbooks in Hong Kong, and also demonstrated how to use AI to adjust the teaching objectives, content activities and assessment methods of mainstream textbooks to adapt to the second language learning requirements of South Asian primary students, who are the minority ethnic in Hong Kong.
The title of Dr Fan Jinghua's speech was "What Will Happen to Language Teaching Methods in the Era of Generative Artificial Intelligence". Dr Fan discussed the impact of the emergence of generative AI on the fundamental ecology of traditional teaching methods, emphasising that language teaching will further shift towards cultivating learners' critical thinking skills.
During the lecture, the speakers interacted and exchanged ideas with both online and offline audience, showcasing the depth and breadth of academic discussion. This lecture not only broadened the horizons of the attendees but also provided new ideas and inspiration for the future of Chinese language teaching.
