Statistics Enrichment Programme for SCCL Staff
Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) strongly believes in providing quality professional development for its research team so as to achieve greater research outcomes in its pedagogical researches. It has organized a number of enrichment programmes for it researchers and lecturers.
In May and June this year, SCCL was honoured to invite Dr. Shen Wei from Central China Normal University and Dr. Soh Kay Cheng, a renowned educationist in Singapore, to conduct a statistics enrichment programmes for the staff.
Titled the "Statistic Approaches to Chinese Language Education in Natural Language Processing", Dr. Shen's lecture illustrated the applications of statistical analysis in phonetics and literatures. He also introduced some relevant disciplines, such as forensic linguistics which involves both statistics and linguistics.
In another session, Dr. Soh Kay Cheng, SCCL's Research Consultant, conducted a workshop on research design for the staff following his statistics lecture series last year. The workshop focused on interventional teaching experiments. Having examined previous research studies, Dr. Soh analysed the statistical inaccuracies in those studies and worked with the participants on how to refine those experimental research designs.
