From April to August this year, 2 new staff have joined SCCL. They are Dr. Cheng Wan-Ni and Dr. He Yanran.

Dr. Cheng Wan-Ni has over 20 years of experience in childhood development and currently serves as the Dean of Early Childhood Care and Education Department at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). As part of the team who formulates and regulates policies in this field, Dr. Cheng has witnessed the development and achievements of early childhood education in Taiwan. Besides the topic of early childhood education, in her recent researches, Dr. Cheng has taken a special interest in interactive games on smartphone devices and multimedia applications with a focus on marketing, consumerism and pop culture for children. She also serves as a consultant for Taiwanese and Japanese gaming companies which design and develop youth products, focusing on her specialization in gaming addiction.

Dr. Cheng is currently involved in the local early childhood education settings; researching and examining the importance of multiculturalism in Singapore and its impact on the teaching of the Chinese Language. Her active approach in the realm of local childhood education continues and lives through improvements in the Chinese teaching industry.

Dr. He Yanran received her Ph.D. in History at National University of Singapore. Her research interests include the history of Ming and Qing Dynasties in China and the social and cultural history of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. Dr. He is currently a Senior Editor cum Research Associate at NTU-SCCL Press.

 New Interns

In addition to 2 new staff, 2 batches of interns have joined the Centre.

The first batch of interns comes from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Ms. Huang Fang is an undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University. Currently, she participates in the SCCL research project "Building a Corpora-Based Chinese Language Teaching Resources Platform for Singapore CL Teachers".

Ms. Soh Yan Jin is an undergraduate at National University of Singapore and is working on the research project "An Investigation of Chinese Composition Writing Processes and Difficulties among Lower Secondary Students in Singapore".

Ms. Zhang Jia is a master student in Chinese Linguistics and Language Acquisition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She takes part in two of SCCL's projects: "A Qualitative Study on Singapore Chinese Language Teachers' Professional Proficiency and Their Training Needs" and "Preliminary Evaluative Study on the Implementation of the New H2 Chinese Language and Literature Syllabus for Pre-University Students in Singapore".

Ms. Kou Fanfei is a master student in Linguistics at CUHK. She participates in the projects "Building a Corpora-Based Chinese Language Teaching Resources Platform for Singapore CL Teachers" and "Studies on Recognizing, Writing and Input of Chinese Character".

The second batch of interns comes from Taiwan.

Ms. Lyu Boning is currently studying Applied Chinese Language and Culture at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). She mainly takes part in 2 projects "An Investigation of Chinese Composition Writing Processes and Difficulties among Lower Secondary Students in Singapore" and "An Evaluation on the iMTL Portal" while supporting another project of "Automated Essay Evaluation System (Field-test)".

Also studying Applied Chinese Language and Culture at NTNU, Ms. Chang Ching-Wen takes part in the research project "A Comparison Study of Using Two Types of E-dictionaries in Learning Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Performance: Case Studies of S1 Students in Normal Academic Bridging Course and Primary Three Students" and "Improving Singaporean Primary Schoolchildren's Chinese Writing Ability through Scaffolding".
