You Jin's Short Essays—Creation and Appreciation
In the interest of providing teachers an opportunity to interact up-close with writers and gain a deeper understanding of their literary works, a talk was organised on 15 September 2016 by Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). You Jin (Mdm Tham Yew Chin), a renowned writer in Singapore, was invited to share about her writing journey and ways of appreciating short essays with some 70 teachers present. The talk was sponsored by the National Arts Council, Singapore.
Using lively examples, You Jin encouraged teachers to analyse her works from three aspects, namely, "Literary", "Content", and "Theme". Her profound but explicit explanation inspired many teachers. At the end of the day, participants walked away with useful tips of short essays appreciation and practical examples that can be applied in the classroom.
