Interview With Prof Wang

Editor: Prof Wang, this is your third visit to Singapore. During this period, you have witnessed the changes and development of Chinese Language education in Singapore. Can you share with us your insights regarding the changes of Singapore's Chinese language education over the past 30 years?
I have gained a vague understanding of the situation of Singapore's Chinese education from the previous two visits. But this particular visit is especially beneficial and provides me with a more in-depth picture. I am delightfully surprised by the huge development of the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). There are a few areas that are especially encouraging. Firstly, there is a strong support from the Ministry of Education (MOE). Officials from MOE make frequent trips to SCCL and from time to time share their insights and give valuable advice. Secondly, SCCL is a close-knitted team comprising of many talents. Thirdly, the leaders of SCCL, down to earth and going all out, have clear development plans and have a keen eye for future potential projects. Most importantly, I see the potential of the Centre to develop further, as they have strategic plans and measures, foresight and the drive to succeed.
Editor: Prof Wang, you possess many years of teaching experience in China and America. During a SCCL internal training session, you have observed that as far as Chinese language education is concerned, Singapore, limited in size it maybe, is on par with China and the US. Can you elucidate us further?
Judging from the efforts devoted to Chinese language teaching and education as a whole, Singapore is taking a leading position. It has the foresight and ambition characteristic of a world power to build up and strengthen the nation through education. SCCL's facilities as well as the amenities and features of all schools across the country are concrete examples. Singapore schools are all equipped with the latest ICT and Singapore teachers are kept abreast of the latest developments in education and pedagogies. Besides, Singapore has a strong teaching force. Generally speaking, Singapore teachers are dedicated and passionate about teaching. In their daily lives, they always have in mind their work and the long-term education needs of Singapore. Equally commendable are Singapore government's effort in implementing the policy of bilingualism and the Ministry of Education's immense efforts in promoting Chinese language education. Such efforts are appreciated by the community and have received immense supports from parents.
Editor: What are the advantages of Singapore in Chinese language education? How about the areas for improvement?
Advantages of Singapore:
- A multi-linguistic and multi-cultural environment.
- MOE and government leaders are foresighted and share a common commitment to education. They are willing to invest in education and give strong support to education researchers.
- Strong support and recognition of the importance of Chinese language education by the education community as evidenced in the establishment of the SCCL.
- Good international ties.
- A team of dedicated teachers.
- Rich source of teaching materials and facilities.
Last but not least, Singapore maintains a global outlook, while keeping in sight of its local needs.
Editor: Based on what you have observed during the SCCL internal training session, can you share your views on the development and future prospects of Chinese language education in Singapore?
As far as Chinese language education is concerned, Singapore possesses many opportunities in terms of time, geographical location and team spirit.The global environment and recent developments of the Asia-Pacific region as well as Singapore's own need to keep pace mean this is the best time for Chinese language education in Singapore. Geographically, Singapore is located in a most advantageous location. It is rich in education resources, has strong government support and has a long tradition of bilingual education. Lastly, Singapore has an outstanding team of Chinese language educators. Singapore teachers work harmonious as a team, supporting and learning from each other, despite differences in age, position and discipline. I have full confidence in the development of Chinese language education in Singapore.
